It’s Spring, and as we thaw out our tootsies, OC is rolling out a pair of two-dollar bin treats for you - the faithful. We even rewound!
First up - ‘This is not Mel Torme - ’ No - it’s TOP SECRET! (shhh - 1984) From the usual gang of idiots who brought you the classic AIRPLANE comes this ludicrous espionage mashup caper. While on tour, young Elvis-like rock star Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) becomes embroiled in a Cold War European brew-ha-ha in East Germany. Will his crooning skills & great hair boost the Resistance quest to stop the unification of a Commie-ruled Germany? (apparently not). Complete with the usual bold Zucker visual gags and an Ingmar Bergman-like co-star, it’s a hoot girlfriend!
Then we get all ‘gangsta’ on youse with JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY (1984), Amy Heckerling’s mob film parody (and cautionary tale) detailing the rise and fall of a fictional ‘30s baddie. From his humble newsboy beginnings we see how Johnny (Michael Keaton) scraped his way to the top of the organized crime world, fighting off arch-rival Danny Vermin (Joe Piscopo in his best role) and wooing sweetheart Lil (Marilu Henner). Will Johnny go straight and change his ways when sent to Death Row? With Peter Boyle, Danny DeVito, Griffin Dunne & Dick Butkus, who cares? Everybody seems to be having fun.
So come on out for some Spring laffs! Spies and Gangsters are the funniest peoples. As always, Freddy’s world-famous Happy Hour and our brain-scratching trivia will amuse and perplex you.
