All kidding aside, it’s summer now & time to pull an Olly! This month we catch massive air in two breezy ‘boarder bro’ movies from the ‘80s!
First up – no one puts the ‘bro’ into THRASHIN’ (1986) like a Brolin – Josh Brolin, that is. As an amateur boarder visiting LA for a chance to compete in a prestigious downhill skate race, he soon falls for the baby sister of the leader of the punk squat skate gang the ‘Daggers’ and gets tangled in a ‘West Side Shakespeare’ feud between ‘the Ramp Locals’ and said Daggers. Featuring a vintage LA punk soundtrack (Devo, Circle Jerks), real skate pro Tony Alva, and an early Red Hot Chili Peppers performance.
Then come along for GLEAMING THE CUBE (1989) – skater lingo for ‘pushing yourself to the edge’ (or something.) Christian Slater is a 16 year old Orange County peroxide skate-rat who plunges into international weapon-smuggling intrigue when he investigates the death of his adopted Vietnamese brother. Btw – his skate crew includes ringers Tony Hawk and Tommy Guerrero, and OG Z-boy Stacy Peralta was ‘technical advisor.’ Bitchin’ chase scenes will ensue, & Christian ‘Skater’ will leave you gasping for air.
So grab yer deck and cruise down to Freddy’s Backroom for a double-shot of radical VHS vibes and awkward stunt doubles - Half-pipe not included. But it will be Happy Hour!
