Warm up your winter with an Obsolete Action Slam. This month we throw down for a VHS battle royale celebrating the ‘90s most improbable action star, Nicolas Cage!
First up is CON AIR (1997). Cage is a paroled convict traveling home for the first time in years on a flying prison transport that gets hijacked — oops! — by criminal mastermind John Malkovich. Cage drawls and hams his way through a lot of bedlam, somehow aiding good guys John Cusack and Colm Meaney to save the day. Or not. Come for the cagey plot, stay for the explosions and crazy cast of cons — Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi, Dave Chapelle and more!
Then we hit THE ROCK (1996). Rogue Force Recon Marines led by Ed Harris have taken Alcatraz Island and a group of tourists hostage, and only one man can help — well, two, really. One is FBI Special Agent Nicolas Cage. The other is federal prisoner Sean Connery, the only man to ever escape Alcatraz. This is the film that launched Cage’s action “career,” and it’s also the one of the first to feature director Michael Bay’s brand of “Bayhem.” BOOM!
