Hack the World: Hackers & Johnny Mnemonic

Long before the Kremlin hacked 2016, there was an innocent time when "Hack the World" was just a cool MTV-style trailer tag. This month we’re taking you there with a cyberpunk double feature worthy of multiple downloads.

First up is HACKERS (1995), a candy-colored adventure featuring Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller as cyber-star-crossed rebel lovers crusading against “the Machine” man with only their fingertips and rave gear to guide them. Get ready for mundane computer coding as a kinetic virtual reality thrill ride as only the ‘90s can! With Matthew Lillard doing his Matthew Lillard thing, and a Penn Jillette cameo.

Then, crank it up to 14.4k baud for JOHNNY MNEMONIC (1995). Keanu Reeves is the unluckiest data courier ever, facing death from either the data downloaded to his brain or death by Yakuza — take your pick. Adapted by cyberpunk O.G. William Gibson from his short story, this is the definitive pre-MATRIX attempt at the genre. With an amazing supporting cast including Dina Meyer, Dolph Lundgren, Takeshi Kitano, Henry Rollins, Ice-T, and Udo Kier.

The singularity is at Freddy’s, with trivia + prizes and Happy Hour prices at the bar!
